"Theri" is a Tamil-language action-drama film directed by Atlee and released in 2016. The movie revolves around the life of a simple and loving school teacher named Joseph Kuruvilla, played by actor Vijay.
Joseph leads a quiet and peaceful life with his young daughter, Nivi (Nainika), in Kerala. However, his past hides a dark secret. Years ago, Joseph was actually Vijay Kumar, a daring and fearless police officer who fought against injustice and corruption. During one of his investigations, he incurred the wrath of a powerful politician named Vanamaamalai (J. Mahendran) and his criminal associates.
Vanamaamalai seeks revenge and orchestrates a brutal attack on Vijay's family, resulting in the death of his wife, Mithra (Samantha Ruth Prabhu). Vijay manages to save his daughter and goes into hiding, assuming a new identity as Joseph.
Years later, Joseph is content with his life as a teacher, but circumstances force him to confront his past once again. Nivi's school is targeted by a gang involved in child trafficking, led by a ruthless criminal named Raghavan (Neil Nitin Mukesh). Nivi becomes a victim of their sinister plans, and Joseph's true identity is revealed.
Driven by the need to protect his daughter and bring justice to those who harmed his family, Joseph reverts to his former self and embarks on a mission to dismantle the criminal network. He employs his intelligence, combat skills, and the support of his friends to take down Raghavan and Vanamaamalai.
